Assessment 1 – Article Critique
Marking Guide
Students will be required to critically appraise ONE article supplied by the course convenor in Week 2/3 using a critical appraisal framework that has been reviewed during the workshops (see page 31 and beyond in the Study Guide). Appraisal of this article will require:
- a summary of the method and findings of the article (10 marks)
- a critical appraisal of the method and consequent relevance of results (20 marks)
- highlighting of the value of this study in relation to practice change (10 marks).

Assessment Item 1 – Article Critique:
Students will be required to critically appraise ONE article supplied by the course convenor, via the
in Week 2. Students are to use the critical appraisal framework located on
pages 30 – 31 of your study guide and titled ‘Critical Appraisal of Studies Assessing Health Care
Interventions – Clinical Trials’.
Appraisal of this article will require:
- a summary of the method and findings of the article (10 marks)
- a critical appraisal of the method and consequent relevance of results (using questions 1 – 13 of the
critical appraisal framework) (20 marks)
- a discussion of the value of this study in relation to practice change (10 marks).
