The Impact of the Food Supplement to the End Users in Selected Area in the Philippines Introduction The promotion of health and wellness is based on the asserted information of the health care professionals that people should take the ideal amount of food such as the “food pyramid” to achieve the healthy body. The target of the programs is particularly children but because of the growing health uncertainties, and the inability of the people to provide the nutrition, the food supplements are created. Food supplements may come from the syrup-based or in a form of tablet or capsule. Apparently, the food supplements became part of the nutrition source of the young and adult and might range into different brands. Background and Problem Statement A dietary supplement, also known as food supplement or nutritional supplement, is a preparation intended to supplement the diet and provide nutrients, such as vitamins, minerals, fiber, fatty acids, or amino acids that are enclosed in a small capsule or tablet. People believed that the use of dietary supplements will help their body cope with stress from the work or studies, and help them increase or enhance the immune system to fight the simple diseases and virus that became more resistant in the antibiotics. Dietary supplements became famous in the busiest places in the Philippines like Manila and Quezon City. The people had an easy access in purchasing the food supplements that are widely available and sell. Unlike the antibiotics and other medicines, the food supplements can be easily purchased because there is no need of prescriptions coming from the doctor. However, people are often deceived by the food supplements because of the use of the pills without the proper assessment of the doctors. In this event, the result can be undesirable. Therefore, what is the impact of food supplements to the end users?  Research Aim and Objectives The main aim of the study is to investigate the impact of food supplements or dietary supplements to the end users. In order to facilitate the investigation, there are four objectives that should be considered. First is to identify the places where the food supplements are popular. Second is to identify the kind of supplements that are popular in the market. Third is to demonstrate the perceptions of the end-users regarding the food supplements and what factors that drives them in buying that product. And fourth is to recognize the impacts of food supplements on the human body based on the experience of the end-users.  Literature Review One common mistakes of purchasing the food supplements is the idea of marketing that might distort the fact regarding the product. The consumers had a high probability to be deceived due to the use of commercials and celebrity endorsers. In addition, taking food supplements as a replacement on the medicines are also evident in the market. Therefore, the manufacturers of supplements are bound to comply on the use of disclosure like the warning and disclaimer, and as well as product experience (heavy, light, and nonusers) on consumers' perceptions of dietary supplements. In general, the government-mandated disclaimer did not impact consumers' beliefs about either the efficacy or the safety of dietary supplements; for most consumers, the disclaimer is unlikely to achieve its intended results. However, when product experience was examined, analyses show that heavy product users responded differently to the disclosures than did light product users and nonusers. Results point to the importance of understanding the influence of individual differences on the interpretation of product disclosures by specific consumer segments. The information is important source to enhance the ability of the consumers to create valuable decisions and provide safe for consumption. One of the most popular food supplements is the Conjugated Linoleic Acid (CLA) that is told to improve the resistance to carcinogenic diseases and to reduce the body fat. Methodology The method in the study is through the use of survey and interview. With the help of the survey, the participants will be chosen based on the population sample of 200 whom all are consumers or end-users. They will answer under the Likert Scale form of questionnaires which measures their satisfaction level. With that, the study can recognize the different perceptions of the buyers and the factors that might be the reason on why they chose the food supplements product/s. On the other hand, the use of interview will be effective among the five people who experienced the impact of food supplements in the matter of 1-2 weeks of using the said product. ORGANIZATIONAL BEHAVIOR

The purpose of this paper is to discuss and investigate an organizational behavior problem within a real life situation. This paper will specifically identify the problems and challenges that is currently facing the organization and developing a SWOT analysis to identify the relevant strengths and weaknesses of the chosen organization and how to use these resources in the company’s advantage. I. INTRODUCTION             The year was 1975, nobody knew then that personal computers would rule the market and would be an important and essential tool in man’s everyday business life. Micro Instrumentation and Telemetry Systems (MITS) announced the first computer, MITS Altair 8800. This milestone inspired pioneer computer enthusiasts namely Bill Gates and Paul Allen to develop a computer program for the MITS Altair 8800 using the published specifications released by MITS in the magazine Popular Electronics. Working day and night Gates and Allen succeeded in creating the first version of Microsoft BASIC for the Altair machine.             Allen then went to Albuquerque, New Mexico to do a demonstration of their software to the MITS president, Ed Roberts. The program ran perfectly in the first try impressing the MITS executive. Allen and Gates were then licensed to produce and distribute the computer program (, 1996, ).             In March 1, 1975, Paul Allen and Bill Gates joined MITS as Directors of Software. They called their partnership Micro-soft. The succeeding years saw great improvements and advancements in the fields of computers and the steady progress and development of Microsoft Corporation as a significant player in the world of computer software. IBM approached Microsoft to design computer software for the computers they are making. Microsoft agreed and it released the highly sensational MS-DOS for the IBM platform. The popularity of MS-DOS enabled Microsoft Corp. to get the biggest shares in the market (, 1996, ). It also assured that Microsoft would monopolize the software and computer industry in the years to come.              Microsoft duplicated its success in MS-DOS by releasing ground breaking software named Windows. Windows features a window management capability that allows a user to view unrelated application programs simultaneously (, 1996, ). It also provides the capability to transfer data from one application program to another.  Aside from these advantages, Windows was also easy to use and has pleasing and uncomplicated interface for its users. Windows also has a graphic user interface and it has popularized computer terms such as toolbars, icons and mouse (, 1994 ). Microsoft released other versions of Windows like Windows 95 and 98 that featured more improvements and enhancement. II. FINDINGS             While Microsoft is growing financially today, the company is also faced with numerous problems and challenges nowadays. Alongside this apparent success is a different aspect of the company. Microsoft has been frequently sued by numerous competitors, U.S. Department of Justice and 50 states in the U.S.  with regards to antitrust violations (, 2000, ). The plaintiffs argued that Microsoft abused its monopoly power in selling operating system and web browsers when it bundled its Internet Explorer with the Microsoft Windows operating system (, 2000, ). This move enabled Microsoft to dominate the web browser wars and elbowed its competitors since consumers now have a free version of Internet Explorer. The U.S. Department of Justice also alleged that Internet Explorer will only work with Windows and not with other software made by Microsoft’s competitors (, 2000, ). Aside from the antitrust suit that Microsoft eventually lost, a formidable challenge faced by the company is the problem of computer and software piracy. Microsoft software and products are being pirated and copied illegally then sold to the consumers at half the price with no revenue going to the firm (, 1999, ). This is appalling since even products and software not yet ready for release to the global market are copied and sold.  Aside from software piracy there are also notions, reports and allegations that Microsoft and its programs are very vulnerable to hackers and computer viruses proliferating in the cyber world (, 1999, ). These viruses cause the computer to act sluggishly losing important data and files. Viruses and other problems inherent in the programs made by Microsoft creates costumer dissatisfaction, negative publicity and loss of sales (, 1999, ). Another huge challenge against Microsoft today is the shift of the world market to an open source program. Open Source programs like Linux are softwares much like the one’s made by Microsoft but with a fundamental difference. The difference lies in that Linux is a stable program, its source code are open and can be modified, it has the best technical support, it runs on a wide range of hardware and most of all it is free (, 2005, ). Since the main advantage of the Linux is that it is free and can be modified freely, Microsoft and its subsidiary companies and softwares are put in an unpleasant position. The market would now gradually shift to Linux and other open source program gobbling up the huge market share and monopoly enjoyed by the company. Linux and other open source program will also force Microsoft to open up the source codes and basic programming codes of its softwares to the public since the current trend now in software programming is open sourcing (, 2005, ). Greater competition and struggle in the software business is also a challenge to the growth of the company. The organization is being threatened by other competitors and other business enterprises that aim to get a big market share that is solely dominated by Microsoft. Aside from competition from other companies, there has also been a trend towards liberalization of the market and the software industry. Liberalization means the gradual decrease of control on the part of Microsoft with regards to source codes and other computer programs because of the recent anti trust rulings made by the U.S. Supreme court. Source codes and computer programs that is unique and the vital in building computers softwares will be gradually distributed to open source programmers and other independent software companies making these source codes available to the public and breaking Microsoft’s monopoly on software designing. This “liberalization” would in turn strengthen other software companies in challenging Microsoft and providing alternative products to the consumers. This move would also decrease the dependency of the market to the products offered by the company since the consumers will have a clear and distinct choice when buying. To combat these negatives external factors, a clear cut policy must be implemented by the company. First, the company must diversify its products. Because of recent government actions and other factors such as new competitors, Microsoft must diversify the products that it offers to the market. Product diversification would mean the modification of products that would have an edge over other competitors in terms of performance, ease of use and compatibility. Diversification would also mean the production of new and unique products that would be bought by the market following the example made by Apple Corporation and their portable music players. Microsoft must also venture producing products and not concentrating all its resources and manpower on a specific area which is software development and design. It must increase its focus on game design, software publishing and home entertainment system to to ease the pressure of competition. Diversification would also mean entering new markets such as China to relieve competition from market rich regions of the world. Microsoft would benefit greatly if it totally enters the Chinese market because of the huge consumer base and the cheap labor cost being offered by China.     SWOT Analysis of Microsoft Corporation STRENGTHS: <ul style="margin-top: 0in; margin-bottom: 0in" type="disc"> <li class="MsoNormal" style="color: black; text-align: justify; line-height: 200%; margin-top: 5.0pt; margin-bottom: 5.0pt"> Microsoft is a huge global brand. It is recognizable for two main reasons. It was one of the largest software developers it has developed a customer base of around 30 million people. It has built its reputation on the successful development of its computer softwares namely the Windows line of products.</li> <li class="MsoNormal" style="color: black; text-align: justify; line-height: 200%; margin-top: 5.0pt; margin-bottom: 5.0pt"> Brand is all-important. Microsoft is one of the most established and healthy IT brands in the World, and has a very loyal set of enthusiastic customers that advocates and uses the brand. With loyal customers, it means that Microsoft does not only recruits new customers but retains old ones.</li> <li class="MsoNormal" style="color: black; text-align: justify; line-height: 200%; margin-top: 5.0pt; margin-bottom: 5.0pt"> The company is composed of different main offices inside the United States and around the globe making the distribution and development of its products easily accessible to the consumers. It has its offices in Germany, United Kingdom and Europe and sub offices in countries such as China, France and Korea.</li> </ul> WEAKNESSES: ·         Microsoft lacks a solid client and service support center on the internet. This is important since problems and bugs with regards to their products must be fix rapidly to attain efficiency. The lack of a customer service center would erode the integrity and quality perceived by costumers on Microsoft products. ·         Microsoft products have compatibility issues with other hardwares and softwares manufactured by other companies. This compatibility issue would then limit the ability of the customer to buy all products made by Microsoft since it would affect the stability and performance of a computer.  ·         Microsoft does not share the programming codes of its softwares making modification difficult if bugs and other malfunctions are detected by programmers not affiliated to the company. OPPORTUNITIES: <ul style="margin-top: 0in; margin-bottom: 0in" type="disc"> <li class="MsoNormal" style="color: black; text-align: justify; line-height: 200%; margin-top: 5.0pt; margin-bottom: 5.0pt"> Microsoft moved into the Chinese market by producing computer programs based on the Chinese language and giving discretionary authority to the Chinese government to censure and to eaves drop on emails, documents and webpage.</li> <li class="MsoNormal" style="color: black; text-align: justify; line-height: 200%; margin-top: 5.0pt; margin-bottom: 5.0pt"> Microsoft has also diversified its products. During the past years the company has ventured into fields such as game design, game developing and publishing and the production of game consoles such as the Xbox.</li> <li class="MsoNormal" style="color: black; text-align: justify; line-height: 200%; margin-top: 5.0pt; margin-bottom: 5.0pt"> The company has also branched out to provide free email and news services to its costumers. It has also developed softwares and computer programs that is vital in organizing business spreadsheets and data.</li> </ul>   THREATS: ·         The success of Microsoft in software development has spawned other competitors to follow the footsteps of the company towards success. The primary competitor of the company in the operating systems industry is the Linux program developed by independent programmers. This program is easy to use and can be obtain free of charge. ·         Since the company is diversifying in other fields it competes its products with the products being made by companies who have been experts in their chosen industry. The company might eventually lost its battles in making its products competitive when put side by side with products made by corporations which has established their name and reputation to the customers. ·         Another threat that is being faced by Microsoft is the different lawsuits and indictments against the company being made by independent companies, programmers and software developers. These lawsuits do not only exhaust the financial resources of the company but it also promotes negative publicity and bad public image.         III. CONCLUSION             Microsoft with its apparent success in the present must face problems that will be evident in the near future. Although Microsoft is a leading company in its chosen field of software industry, the dominance and the monopoly that it enjoys can be erased and its dominance in the market can be eclipsed by other new companies in the industry. The paper has identified several problems inherent to the company and have highlighted the effects that these negatives factors will bring on the over all stability of the company in the future. Problems such as poor designs, the challenge of other competitors like Linux and tightening government control are some of the hindrances that will eventually obstruct Microsoft in its road to progress. To eliminate and to diminish the impact of these problems and difficulties, the company must undertake needed reforms and initiate policies that will improve certain aspects of the company.  IV. RECOMMENDATIONS             To fully combat the problems being faced by Microsoft, the paper recommends some course of actions stated below.             Microsoft should adapt stringent maintenance and reliability on its products. It must implement measures that would help curb the effects of computer viruses and the company must employ stiff computer firewalls against hackers and identity thieves. Assuming viruses do get into the system, Microsoft must have an immediate manpower and technical resources to remedy the situation and in addressing the issues, and helping the costumers with regards to their computer problems. This is very vital since the absence of frequent maintenance and a costumer service hotline could adversely affect the company’s reputation, profits and costumers. With regards to its products and softwares, Microsoft must be extra watchful when it is going to release a product. It must consider all legal and political changes occurring in the society to avoid being sued and fined with a heavy sum. This incident is not only counterproductive to the goals of the company but also damaging to a company’s reputation. Microsoft can also win against piracy by making its products pirate proof, making all softwares and products unable to function when they are recopies of the original. Employees should also be checked and security measures should be implemented in the office to prevent the leak of current projects and new softwares not yet released for the market. In relation to the challenge posed by Linux and the advent of open source system, Microsoft can use and improve its quality management and maintenance with regards to a proper operations management. First, Microsoft in order to survive, must step up its quality management in relative to its products and softwares. Stepping up the level of quality management is not only improving the excellence and superiority of its products but also listening to the desires and wishes of the costumers since they are ones that must be satisfied by the company. Microsoft must replicate the steps and actions that they took that enabled their Xbox to be a success. It must listen to feedbacks from the publics regarding its products and implementing these feedbacks as a solid answer to the expansion of Linux. V. BIBLIOGRAPHY

HUMAN RESOURCE MANAGEMENT       INTRODUCTION                         The workplace today is in a state of metamorphosis with contemporary issues such as customer satisfaction, competitive advantage, revenue and expenditures, organizational culture, technological advancement, global markets, diverse customer demands and need for effective workforce with a global mindset penetrating every aspect of the organization. Effective workforce is crucial as it is the organization’s primary player in accomplishing goals and delivering service. According to  and  (2004) a firm’s human resource management (HRM) practices and the kind of workforce help attain organizational competitiveness (). HRM is the organizational function that enhances creativity, innovation, speed, flexibility, and efficiency of the workforce to transform them into organizational assets. Human resource management is now highly recognized as a strategic lever for the organization in creating value.   THE HUMAN RESOURCE MANAGEMENT FUNCTION                          and  (1995) state that human resource management is a system that attracts, strengthens, encourages, and maintains employees who are responsible for the successful functioning and survival of the organization and its members (). The key functions and components of Human Resource Management are human resource planning, recruitment and selection, employee motivation, employee performance evaluation, industrial relations, employee services and employee training, development and education ( 2006).             Human resource planning as cited by the  (2007) is the process by which an organization defines its manpower needs for every job position, forecasts its future needs for people, and evaluates the existing pool of manpower to determine its strengths and weaknesses. The process starts by analyzing the business needs of the organization, competitive pressures, and future manpower requirements. Business needs include increased revenue, profitability, quality of products, efficiency, security, and customer satisfaction. Business organizations are pressured to foresee how employees can contribute to the attainment of these elements ( and  2000, ). Secondly, competition puts pressure on the business.  and  (2004) state that competitive pressures encourage firms to copy the manufacturing processes, product features, technology, and delivery mechanisms of their competitors. However, human resources cannot be duplicated. Thus, firms must be able to promote an organizational culture that attracts valuable and competent people (). Thirdly, human resource planning involves forecasting the number and kind of employees required for the future. This includes assessing the strengths and weaknesses of personnel, anticipating resignation and retirements, identifying the functions wherein employees best fit, and determining the employees who have the potential to handle any kind of responsibility. One technique used in human resource planning is talent inventory which enables HR practitioners to gauge employees’ competencies, knowledge, and  potential, and establish an organizational baseline of human capital. Job analysis comes after talent inventory which is the method of specifying the performance parameters and skill requirements of each job. Information gathered from talent inventory and job analysis serves as basis for recruitment and selection activities ( and  2000,  ). Recruitment is the process whereby the firm determines, seeks, and attracts people to fill current and anticipated job vacancies necessary for organizational growth ( 2002, ). Selection, on the other hand, is the process of meticulously documenting and assessing the applicants’ information including skills, employment experience levels, trainings acquired, and salary levels in order to determine their congruency with the specifications of the jobs to be filled ( and  2001, ). Since human resource planning enables the establishment of a workforce profile which includes information on trainings acquired, significant work experiences, present functions, educational background, leadership potentials and so on, recruitment and selection activities are guided as to what kind of people are needed in the organization to enhance existing talents and fill knowledge gaps ( and  2000, ). Recruitment and selection are also assisted in discovering the most qualified people who can adapt to the existing organizational culture and can contribute to organizational outcomes, productivity and financial performance ( and  1999, ). Human resource planning, recruitment and selection are crucial for strengthening a firm’s competitive readiness and renewal abilities to contribute to organizational development ( and  2000, ).  (1998) states that employee motivation is crucial to organizational survival because motivated employees offer more commitment and productivity. Motivating employees entails the provision of material and psychological rewards such as good pay, interesting work, recognition or praise, job security, favorable working conditions, professional growth opportunities, and coaching ( 2006). However,  (2001) argues that employee motivation also results from the employee’s ability to do a certain job. For example, an employee who is not an accounting graduate cannot effectively perform basic administrative functions of debit and credit. Thus, human resource planning should correctly define job requirements, properly design job functions, and effectively match an employee’s abilities with the specifications of the job. Employees who find their functions to be clearly specified and patterned after their interests and skills would be motivated to perform at their best. Relative to employee motivation is employee retention. An organization cannot afford to lose competent staff due to poorly designed jobs and unfavorable working environment. Human resource planning plays a role in employee retention by anticipating future resignations and separations. This activity entails human resource personnel and managers to monitor the extent, reasons, and costs associated with resignation. Lack of awareness and understanding of the nature of resignation within the organization means that the firm is blind on how many competent employees are being lost. The result of forecasting in human resource planning enables the firm to adopt certain steps to address the issues of employee resignation and retention ( 1996). HRM also facilitates the performance evaluation of staff in order for the organization to take account of its manpower and assess its contributions to organizational goals. Specific reasons for conducting performance evaluation are: to strengthen overall organizational performance by improving the individual performance; to identify existing potential which can be utilized to either handle future higher position vacancies or other jobs for a better use of the abilities; and to provide a fair method of relating compensation to performance where there are no numerical criteria ( 2006). In addition, human resource management is responsible in seeing to it that organizational policies and procedures adhere to labor and social laws.  (1998) claims that the human resource management function upholds employee aspirations in light of societal and labor laws and at times is obliged to intervene when employees run into difficulties personally and professionally; serves as the organization's conscience by verbalizing any violations in the organizational values and ethics; and treats people with kindness, respect and affection ().  (2002) elaborates that human resource management personnel inform the management on the details of existing employment contracts and emerging trends and how to comply with them; administer the just implementation of wages and salaries; maintain the consistency of employer practices with definite policies; and implement an employee “voice mechanism” for complaints and grievances to reach the management (). Finally, HRM is concerned with employee training, development and education through a career development program and human resource development. The human resource planning activity of establishing a profile of the current and needed skills and competencies of an organization’s manpower renders much importance in training and development.  and  (2000) state that training and development entail the accumulation and thorough scrutiny of the actual work situation including job descriptions, task analysis and employee’s capacities. Human resource planning provides these things. Thus, training and development can only be effective after an analysis of the existing work situation has been done so that the kind of training is tailored after the real needs of the staff.  (2006a) states that employees undergo training, development and education to augment job satisfaction, strengthen the employees’ capability to handle new technologies and procedures, encourage innovation and strategies, and improve the employees’ skill proficiency.   PRINCIPLES OF TRAINING AND DEVELOPMENT               The training function of human resource management is contemporarily termed as human resource development. It is a systematic effort to facilitate employee acquisition of present and future job-related knowledge, skills, and attitudes or assist them to correct any shortcomings in their performance ( 2002, ).  and  (1998) report that training and development revolves around three areas – individual employee development, career development and performance improvement (). Individual employee development aspires to develop the employee’s knowledge, competence and motivation necessary for improving job efficiency and performance. In order to do this, the trainor must follow eight steps in the conduct of the training: solicit the attention and interest of the employee, orient the employee on the objectives of the training, determine prior knowledge on the concepts of the present training, explain the contents of the training as well as the skills that it wants to impart, provide the parameters for coaching, encourage the trainee to participate, assess employee’s learning while in the training process and encourage the employee to incorporate his learning to actual work situations (  2007). Secondly, the key objective of career development is to help employees analyze their abilities and interests and decide to enter in a career development program. First, the human resource personnel and managers must develop a helping relationship with the employee. There is a need to encourage the employees to openly discuss their career goals, strengths, and areas of improvement in order to determine the kind of career development to provide. The employee’s interest must also be obtained since this would determine the success of the training. Human resource personnel must talk with the employees on the need for providing the training. When the employee agrees to participate in a career developmental process, the manager or human resource personnel should advice them to work and participate well. After the career development program, the supervisors and human resource personnel must be able to monitor employee performance to evaluate the effectiveness of the training provided ( 2007). Finally, training and development must be aimed at performance improvement ( and 1998)  Many business firms use training to facilitate learning, improve performance, ensure continuous learning and enable sharing of knowledge. Employees engage in training and development to learn and practice self-efficacy, effective customer service, tolerance for diversity, teamwork, and technical skills. Training is also a part of continuous learning strategy which is the long-term process of acquiring knowledge, skills, attitudes and motivations for personal and organizational development. Finally, the essence of training and development in performance improvement culminates in the willingness and ability of employees to interact and share ideas to improve production processes, group decision-making, product and service delivery, and inter-department functions ( 2002,        ).   HUMAN RESOURCE MANAGEMENT TERMS Job analysis – This is the process of defining the work, activities, tasks, products, services, or processes performed by an employee.
