The Characteristics that make an Epic Hero
The epic of Gilgamesh recounts the tales of a headstrong and selfish young king who eventually transformed into an excellent and wise ruler. Epic heroes are shaped by the adventures that transform them from arrogant young lads to wise and strong kings.
Epic heroes are born, not made. They are usually male and blessed or born with superhuman strength that allows them to overcome any challenges which they encounter in their adventures.
Tasks are typically given to epic heroes as a crucial part of their transformation. The tasks are indicative of the necessary traits that an epic hero should possess.
The birth of an Epic Hero is foretold, often by an oracle or seer. Conditions surrounding the birth of an epic hero are often tumultuous the nemesis is characterized by a powerful tyrant whose reign is foretold to be broken by the hero in question.
It is typical for Epic Heroes to be of royal blood although they grow up in an environment free of the pampering they would normally have if they hadn’t somehow ended up misplaced or if circumstances hadn’t changed their fate.
