Ok class, listen! I know you are familiar with such lines when you are a student. Our former educators specifically in elementary days always discipline us.  I really appreciate the role of teachers, aside from teaching us academic lessons, they also teach us discipline and proper decorum. It is important in a child’s development that they are also develop as law abiding citizens with value for respect and good manners.

 Classroom Management 101

New teachers are having a hard time dealing with unruly students that will definitely catch them a headache every time they see the undisciplined activities of the class. Maintaining order in classrooms is always been an issue to teachers and school officials.  Here are some guidelines that can help teachers in dealing with classroom discipline.

1.    Having a good start

As a teacher, remember that the first time you entered a class during the first day of school, all of the students were just staring at you, and maybe asking questions at the back of their minds like: Who the hell is this person standing in front of us? Can we get along with her?  During the first encounter of the students on their teachers they set an expression whether they will respect you or if they will give you severe headaches during the entire school year. First impressions last! Try to reach out students in the friendliest way possible, to be able to win their trust and confidence on you. You must research on the new trends and fads to start the conversation and to establish a point of similarity between you and your students.  Be prepared! Students will try to test you as a teacher during the first month of classes. You must be friendly but strict in the implementation school policies.

2.    Set your rules

Yes, you can get along with your students but you must set some rules inside the classroom and strictly implement it. You must tell them to minimize noise, respect others and to avoid violating school policies. Discuss the importance of these rules so that they could understand why do want them to follow such rules.

3.    Read lessons in advance

Aside of dealing with unruly students, you can also encounter intelligent and wise students who will test your intellectual ability and mastery of the lesson. If in case, you unfortunately can’t answer the questions raised by those bookworms inhabiting your classroom then they will lose trust on you as well as they will doubt your competence and mastery of the subject. Better study future lessons in advance to be able to maintain your composure and confidence as a teacher. As you read your lessons, try to think of possible questions that your students will raised as the lesson progress, so that you will have an idea of how to answer them.

4.   Learn their names

Every individual will be happy when you can recognize them and call them by their names. They will appreciate it if you will not call them by their surnames when you call them to recite or to report. Recognizing your student’s names makes them feel that they are important to you. It is a hard task of remembering numerous names but it will benefit you by gaining respect and closeness from your students.

5.    Be Consistent!

Consistency will make you a good teacher. You must stand with your position on rules and regulations regardless of different circumstances. By doing this, your students will feel that you treat them equally. We know for the fact that you cannot avoid of having favorites in your class specially those bright and behave students who always follow you, but you must set fairness in dealing with everyone in class. No one is above the rule that you set in the classroom.

6.   Give them the feeling of importance

You are not just there to teach them. You have to be second parents during the entire school year. Let your students see that they are important to you. Talk to them about their problems, support them in every goal they want to achieve in life, join their activities on weekends and be a true friend for them. It is the most important role of teachers, being a second mom or a second dad. Students will treat you with respect and will be open when you make them feel important.

Warning!  Raging students!

One of the important aspects of classroom management is dealing with disturbed students. Don’t shout, it will make you look uneducated.  Don’t scold them as if they are the most unwanted student in class. Be gentle but firm while talking with them to make them feel that you understand their problems. Tell them that you are not angry with them but you are just angry of what they did. Give them confidence that they can change for the better. Remember that everyone has a positive thing inside them. Scolding students will only make them feel that they are unwanted and rejected. Try to talk with them one on one and understand their reasons why they have done some negative acts.

Every individual are different from one another same goes with students, they are different in one way or another. As a teacher you must adjust to these differences. Respect their personal beliefs and teach them to become good citizens of the country. It is in your hands to create good students. Every successful individual have  teachers that molded them to success.
