A Study of Punishment of Students towards Academic Performance

Introduction

Many people often perceive that children are needed to be disciplined in order to attain the right attitude towards other people. Usually, parents are the one who are the regulator or maker of the rules inside the house and acts as teachers in values and ethics. But most of the parents use the idea of punishment and relates it with the principle of discipline.

Background of the Study and Problem Statement

Punishment can commonly found inside the correctional, but it can be also applied in different setting such as in household and in organization. People have a natural way of thinking that when one is committed a sin and believed that he is guilty of it therefore, he should be punished. On the other hand, when one person made something in favor of the organization or in the honor of his parents definitely, he should be rewarded. The carrot and stick method is popular in the household and this is also used by the parents to encourage their child and establish a great interest most especially in learning. Apparently, there is a revolving issue with regards to the punishments of the students in order to achieve their expected academic performance.

Research Objectives

There are three objectives that were recognized in the study. First is to identify the reasons on the existence of punishment for the students. Second is to identify that people involved in the way of punishment. And third is to establish a strong ground about the effects of the punishment.

Research Questions

The study was guided by the essential question in exploring the world of the students most especially, those students who experience the wrath of punishment.

1.      What are the common goals of punishment?

2.      How important for the parents and educators in implementing the idea of discipline?

3.      In what ways does a child receives the punishment when he or she have a failing subject?

Literature Review

The disciplines includes the knowledge, training that develops self-control, character, orderliness, and efficiency where this kind of control sometimes involves punishment and as a system of rules. The disciplinary actions may vary and sometimes being problematic on itself. Being in control does not elaborate the meaning of being a warden at a prison but it means the order and discipline (Agbenyega, 2006). As part of control, punishments tied both on the household and schools. Students showed the different behavior when they are awarded punishment. There is a significant result on lacking of interest in their academic work, negative behaviors, and their academic progress suffers from a gradual regression. Some students who managed the psychological treatment develop an interest in learning, became friendly, and improve their long-term academic performance (Rafi, 2007). But in the excessive use of punishment, children often produce the anxiety, depression, withdrawal, and tension. Definitely, it affects their desire to learn (Nasir, 2007).

Methodology

The applied method of the study is the use of the questionnaires where the participants are divided into three- the parents, educators, students that were all in high school level. The questionnaires only incorporate the “yes and no” answers. The questions indicated in the questionnaire are all related in the academic performance of the students, their ability to learn, the different approach of the parents and children to support the child, and the use of the punishment in improving their academic performance.

Analysis

Based on the questionnaires, most of the parents viewed the importance of punishment in improving the lifestyle of the child. Parents believe that punishment is not a type of discipline but most of the time; they use scolding whenever their students got the failures. Meanwhile, teachers also give the role of punishment as an effective solution in improving the academic performance they do not encourage the pedagogical system to use it often or be part of the system in teaching. On the other hand, there are students who admitted received the punishment when they failed in academics. In order to avoid the punishment, students often lied to their parents.

Conclusion

Clearly, punishment affects their concentration in the classroom and leaves the impression in their minds that might degrade their well-being. Punishment might turn into violence that might be part of the future self of the student. This is an alarming situation because most of the students in India are committing suicides to avoid different consequences caused by the pressures in school and from their parents’ expectations.
