Effects of Climate Change on New Zealand’s Tourism Industry

Introduction

Given to the fact that the tourism industry is a great indicator towards the sustainable economic development, many countries are now actively participating in creating a competitive tourism. Each aim of the country resembles their willingness to promote the environmental beauty and culture of the country. The global movement towards the modernization, however, affects the popularity of tourism in each country. Much more, the climate changes can deliberately affects the tourism in the countries around the globe.  

Background and Problem Statement

Tourism contributes almost 10% to New Zealand’s economy, 18% are gained from the export and employment but it is recognized that the country might be in critical situation due to the climate changes. Therefore, the tourism in the country has a plan towards the effective response of the both sector and government in this global problem. The tourism plan of New Zealand for the climate change is proposed to be relevant with the government agencies which will tackle the issues that are currently affecting the sector and for the next three years. With the strategic responses that can be formulated in the planning, the interaction between the processes of boosting the tourism and simultaneously reducing the impacts of climate change is possible. The planning is important to assess the overall strategy and appropriate response in the climate change. Due to this emergent action of the country in the issue of climate change, what would be the effects that it might create in the tourism industry if neglected in the industry?  

Research Aim and Objectives

The main aim of the study is to investigate the relative effects of climate change in New Zealand, particularly in the tourism sector. In order to achieve the necessary information, there are four objectives that needed to be satisfied. First is to determine the sources of economic effects due to the climate change. Second is to identify the areas in tourism that can be affected in the continuous change in the climate. Third is to recognize the internal and external action done by the government of New Zealand to prevent the drastic situations in tourism to happen. And fourth is to determine the effectiveness of the plans promoted by the country to reduce the impact of climate change in the industry.

Literature Review

New Zealand identified that there is an indirect economic effects created by the climate change. Despite of the numerous proposals for binding the emissions, the reduction target in both national and global level can be attained in the year of 2050. Aside from the climate changes, the tourism industry also recognizes the changes in the consumer preferences which might holistically affect the performance of the industry in the economic level. With this, the changes in the processes such as goods and services should be also formulated. In addition, the tourism industry is highly positive in receiving the new technologies and necessary business models to accompany the promotion of the tourism in the country. However, climate change remains the most important issue not only in the country but through the entire globe. The past and present greenhouse gas emissions committed towards the climate changes which might place the world’s economy underpinned by a reliance on fossil fuels. Through the dependency of each country, the innovativeness is possible to undertake the various shifts in the tourism. The effects of the climate change cannot be deny, for it already changes the level of water in the ocean and left various changes in the sculptures of the landscapes. New Zealand is now dealing with the problem in tourism and in climate change and as a strategy, reducing the greenhouse gas emission in the aviation can be the main focus. Although the country is facing a great risk in terms of consumer’s preferences to travel, there are initiatives that the country can adopt.

Methodology

The suggested method in the study is the use of secondary data that can be acquired from the case studies, environmental reviews, National or regional tourism reports, and other contexts that will determine the effects of climate change in the tourism sector of the country. The use of the said method is an advantage in the study for the researcher/s can review the relevant information regarding the climate change and the action done by the people to reduce its negative impacts. In addition, with the aid of the said materials, the study can analyze the strategies applied by the government and the New Zealand tourism sector to maintain the tourism life of the country.
