Summary/Critique: “Supersize Your Child?”

 

            Genetic engineering provides options to parents and to the society of possibly “improving” the human race, but also becomes an international concern. The article emphasizes that the discovery of various ways in altering the human gene provide alternative ways on how parents would be able to modify the genetic make-up of their children in producing a “better” child. A number of arguments in favor of the issue were presented in order to support the deemed advantages of genetic engineering, including researchers and scientists engaged in different genetic engineering research. However, despite their claims, a number of issues, particularly ethical and legal issues have also been raised, which may hinder further advancements, specifically regarding the use of human subjects. In the end, the issue becomes an international concern, as the author calls for the cooperation and action of the United Nations and international bodies in order to take responsibility and response.

            The article provides strong and logical arguments, as it emphasizes on different important concepts needed to be understood in order to identify the main argument of the author. A number of evidences were presented in order to support the argument the author wants to make. A number of important concepts related to the issue were also presented and briefly defined in order to emphasize on the different issues.

            However, only ethical and legal issues were included and not moral issue that presents the view of the church. Explanations and definitions are too brief, thus, needing more in depth explanation of the terms, as they are considered complicated. More evidences from researchers could have been presented or included in order to support the arguments that want to be emphasized.
