HEALTHCARE COMMUNICATION

Healthcare communication is concerned with all out care and good relationship development to promote a free exchange of ideas through scientific and medical information for the benefits of the patients and the industry in general, through the use of good communication skills. It is also important that doctors and medical health care professionals must share their expertise and skills especially in their new inventions and discovery about medicines, drugs, medical products and devices and other forms of cures so as to provide innovative and solutions to the medical problem that people need. It is also important to consider the general public to receive realistic and accurate findings about their conditions, right cure and right medicine to promote healthy relationship between health workers and their clients. Patients must be aware of all the information they need to know so that they can be prepared and decide about the cures they are going to deal with. If a person is dying and the only cure is chemotherapy they can also decide if they want to go through such treatment but they can also decide if they want to refuse to this proceedings.

Usually a constant communication benefited patients in a good outcome if they are constantly reminded and assured that they are going to go through a series of test that is safe and will provide relief and usually patients cooperate because they want immediate treatment in most of their disease. Communication is critical to the most severe patients who can hardly move but health workers have their own communication strategy in medical and health services. This can highly improve the patient’s willingness to cooperate and listen to the treatment they have to go through, good communication coming from health workers also give the patient a sense of security that they are seriously been take cared of in this hospital or clinic. A good harmonious relationship and confidence for both parties are created and basically be healed.

Healthcare communication has a very clear objective in care but a poor communication from patients usually lead to a very dangerous circumstance if there is a slight miscommunication or bad and disruptive behavior coming from doctors and nurses or other health professionals. This is a very unethical and unprofessional medical practice if for example they have been arguing with clients or forcing patients to take the medicine or worst shout with them or humiliate them if they do not follow simple instruction. Especially weak or old patients who do not have the power to argue usually suffer from self pity and humiliation that causes too much pain and therefore uneasiness and errors that definitely contributes to the worsening of their disease rather than cure. According to the American Academy on Communication in Healthcare (AACH) that 97.4% surveyed by the American College of Physician Executives has shown that doctors, nurses and health workers has behavioral problems. This is definitely not a good indication of a good relationship from medical professionals to their patients and will definitely contribute to unsatisfactory confidence of their patients and thus the health will simply be affected if they have experience cases of unsatisfactory communication.

Health care professional must first and foremost exercise a satisfying engagement in communication to all people in their workplace especially to their patients. Good healthcare communication will provide a less risk participation when dealing with patients, their interaction and personal relationship can create a very good outcome for the patients so that they will listen religiously about their advice and treatment. Miscommunication between doctors or nurses can cause severe issues for the health of the patients that can even lead to death there should be no error particularly during surgery. AACH also believed that miscommunication leads to 25% medical errors because of miscommunication while 70% leads to medical malpractice and this is cause by relationship and miscommunication while 66% of their error is because of unguarded events and miscommunication.

This research shows that communication and relationship development is definitely critical and this can cause several negative and positive outcome, good communication skills improves good quality in healthcare, teamwork, patient’s safety, cooperation and therefore cure. But miscommunication creates confusion, accident and medical malpractices. Therefore all organization must definitely exercise the theories and principles of therapeutic communication which is to provide healthy and non judgmental atmosphere that health workers must learn to accept what the patients says or reject them objectively, active participation and give and take communication interaction not to monopolize words and act like an authority and not a ruler. Nurses should also exercise communication and privacy to talk to the patients and concerned family. These are just some of the theories and principles that they should never forget to exercise to be able to provide the highest quality of a give and take relationship to their patients.
