Summary/Critique: “Colleges Caught in Vise” by Stanley Fish

Colleges in the United States suffer from cost crisis, thus, preventing educational institutions to provide the kind of education students deserve. The article emphasizes the different possible problems associated with making college education businesslike, which include provision of poor facilities, lack of budget allocation for needed equipments, lack of good educators, and providing less or no services to “undeserving” students. The article raised the reason to raise fees, which is to offer good quality education, but with cost-cutting, low quality and poor education will be provided in the future. At the end of the article, the stand of the author was expressed, which stressed that it is feasible for any institution to offer the best quality education with a limited budget.

The article provides strong and logical arguments, as it presents the issue or main argument of the article in an organized fashion and in clear manner. He presented the many evidences, such as real cases or proofs, before stating his stand. The author used an effective style, as he was direct to the point in stating his stand regarding the issue. In order to support his stand and argument, he presented the negative consequences of the issue.

However, the author made use of a long introduction before presenting the main stand or argument of the article. Some terms introduced in the article were not defined, even briefly, in order to make the argument of the author more clearly and to clarify its use to the readers. Lastly, only the view of the author and the two Republicans were expressed and not the view of publics of the article, who are the students and the parents, being the most concerned parties of the issue.
