Pharmacy is a Good Profession
Pharmacy is the name applied to the art of preparing drugs for administration to the sick and dispensing them as medicines (Dewey, 2002). The word derives from the Greek term pharmakon, which means drug or medicine (Liddell and Scott, n.d.). Specifically, pharmacy is considered as the science of imparting the knowledge required in order to identify, procure, formulate, standardise the drug and offer the necessary environment to maintain its therapeutic activity, at the same time, to regulate distributions of drugs.
During the ancient times, the senior people from tribes used to exercise their own experiences in the hours of needs and repeated practice of the said happening which resulted to compilation of all the said knowledge into apothecary. As a result, there is a common belief that a person involved in this profession was associated with some spiritual power, thus drug along with its natural effect had some magical involvement in curing the disease. This is the reason why tribal apothecary was treated differently in the society. This era was followed by the involvement of apothecary in priestly activities because of the belief that they are newar to God because of their spirtual power (Gaud, 2008, 61).
As time goes by the role of pharmacists, or the experts in pharmacy has expanded extensively in recent years, which make it a hugely varied profession. With this, it can be said that pharmacy is a good profession.
Pharmacy is a good professon because it can take you to a wide variety of roles in the healthcare industry.
First, it can take you to become community pharmacist or to be in the retail industry. Individual can be in the retail industry where medicines and tonics were sold for treatment of ailments and illnesses. Thus, the responsible focus on mixing compounds and ingredients according the needs of the patients. In addition, they can also offer advices and counselling about common health topics such as diet, exercise as well as stress reduction (Nutt, n.d.).
In addition, Pharmacy can also take individual towards the healthcare industry. Pharmacists are considered as important part of the Healthcare system. Each hospital, clinic, nursing as well as convalescent home has pharmacists who will take the prescription of the doctors, at the same time, device a medicine regimen for treatment. Hospitals have numbers of pharmacists who prescribe the medications and arrange daily dossage for each of the patient (Nutt, n.d.). It is important to consider that in hospitals pharmacists are becoming the center of things. Because robots are being used in order to dispense medicines, which freed the phamacists with the patients on the ward and enable them to become part of the decision-making team (Science Engineering Net, n.d.).
In addition, pharmacists can also enter the industrial pharmacists. This is where an interest in research comes in the development of gene theraphy as well as nano-medicines, as exciting areas of medical research (Science Engineering Net, n.d.). Pharmacists are needed in order to develop them. On the other hand, insurance and benefits companies are also requiring pharmacists in order to monitor prescriptions and treatment for reimbursement purposes. Pharmacists are also responsible for creating medicinal regimens and support the establishment of processes and procedures in reviewing and approving different treatments (Nutt, n.d.).
Pharmacists can also work with government agencies and organizations. Regulatory pharmacists work for the different government bodies in order to protect public health. Thus, they ensure that medicines being submitted by drug companies are safe before it can be manufactured and marketed in the public (Science Engineering Net, n.d.).
Academic pharmacy is another important field which pharmacists can work with. Whether it is teaching, researching, practicing or mix of these three, academic pharmacists can enjoy exciting careers in different universities and research institutes (Science Engineering Net, n.d.). In addition, pharmacists and other related scientists are founders of most of the contemporary pharmaceutical companies in the world (Nutt, n.d.).
Another field to be considered is the veterinary pharmacy. As time goes by, pharmacists are becoming more and more involved in supporting the welfare of animals by supplying professional services to pet owners (Science Engineering Net, n.d.).
