Case study

Clare is a 60 year old woman of African Caribbean descent. She is retired and always at the GP's surgery, almost every week. She lives alone in a market town in Lincolnshire and rarely goes out. Her son, daughter-in-law and 2 grandchildren live nearby and although she sees them regularly she has little company. This is partly due to her moving 200 miles to live nearer her son and family after her husband died. She has been severely depressed since her husband died and is recovering from a heart attack.

Clare is supposed to attend the coronary rehabilitation unit and the GP is trying to encourage her to undertake the supervised exercise programme and then to get a bit more active in her everyday life or to maybe even join the new local community gym as part of a GP referral for exercise scheme [where she would be supervised by both the trained gym staff and the physiotherapist from the practice]. She is very reluctant but the GP keeps trying as he feels that both the activity and getting out meeting new people would be beneficial.
